Garrison Schoolhouse Restoration Project

The Garrison Schoolhouse is a one-room schoolhouse that will be 175 years old in 2025.The building has been moved twice, ultimately finding its forever home on the property of Fort Winnebago Surgeons Quarters in Portage, Wisconsin. When the school closed in 1960, the Wisconsin Society Daughters of the American Revolution agreed to care for the building and one dollar was exchanged in the purchase.
What We Need: Prior to moving the schoolhouse in 1960, a foundation was built at FWSQ Historic Site to support the building. That ‘new’ foundation used stones from Fort Winnebago, once in a bridge over the Fox River. Now sixty years later, the old, quarried stone of the 1818-1845 era, needs stabilization. A new foundation and floor framing system will be put into place with a new pine floor.The estimated cost of the project is $70,000.
